Bill Cole

Bill Cole is running for mayor of Billings. He is the owner of Cole Law Firm, PLLC and his law practice focuses primarily in the areas of land use and real estate.  He has been a very active community volunteer over the last 28 years, playing a prominent role in numerous community organizations including the Billings Chamber of Commerce, the Alberta Bair Theater, the Yellowstone Art Museum, and the Billings YMCA. Bill faces state Representative and former chair of the Montana Republican Party Jeff Essmann on the November 7th election. As a state legislator since 2005, Essmann has earned a dismal 16% lifetime score from MCV opposing efforts to protect public lands, expand clean energy, and increasing voter participating in elections.

Charlie Smillie is running in Ward 1 against incumbent Mike Yakawich in Billings which includes the Southside, Pioneer Park down to the river, downtown and the heights south of Hilltop. Charlie works with communities in eastern Montana to build local support for issues and campaigns across Montana’s Prairie Wildlands. He prefers the pace of foot travel in wild places, absorbing everything from wildflowers at his feet to the rich tapestry of landscapes that stretches to the horizon.

Denise is running for Ward 3 on the Billings City Council. She works as a special needs assistant at Lewis & Clark Middle School. She is involved in volunteer activities at the Amend Community Garden, North Plains Women’s Museum, and the Special Olympics. Denise is running against Nadja Brown in the general election. Nadja did not return MCV’s questionnaire.

Penny Ronning

Penny Ronning

Penny is running for Ward 4 on the Billings City Council. Ward 4 covers a long, narrow swath of the city between the Rims and roughly Colton Boulevard, from North 27th Street all the way to the Ironwood Subdivision, as well as the Rehberg Ranch Estates. Penny is the co-founder and co-chair of the Yellowstone County Area Human Trafficking Task Force, volunteers for CASA of Yellowstone County, and in 2013, founded Operation: Billings Child, a community holiday gift program that collects and distributes wrapped shoe-boxes filled with items for homeless children and youth enrolled in School District 2.

Penny is a filmmaker and nature photographer. Penny enjoys spending time outdoors in the company of her dogs and in her garden. She is running against George Blackard who did not return MCV’s questionnaire.
