MCV-Endorsed Candidates Give Billings City Council a Conservation Majority

Shaw, Choriki, and Boyett win key seats thanks to strategic investment

(BILLINGS, Mont.) – In a historic win, three of the candidates endorsed by Montana Conservation Voters tonight won their general elections, giving the Billings City Council a conservation majority.

The newly elected Billings City Council members are Kendra Shaw in Ward 1, Danny Choriki in Ward 3, and Mike Boyett in Ward 5. MCV did not endorse either candidate in Ward 2.

With the election of these three conservation leaders, the current makeup of MCV-endorsed elected leaders on the council is now six out of eleven.

“On behalf of Montana Conservation Voters, we congratulate all incoming council members on these important victories,” said Aaron Murphy, Executive Director of MCV and a Billings resident. “Our city has some important decisions to make about our future, from making Billings more energy-efficient to connecting our trail systems and funding our parks. We’re proud of the role we played in electing Billings’ first-ever conservation majority and we look forward to the critical work ahead.”

MCV’s political action committee made a record investment in a targeted independent expenditure campaign to support its four endorsed candidates. Over the course of the election, the MCV Action Fund sent more than 13,000 mailers, knocked 1,500 doors, called nearly 6,000 voters, and sent more than 13,000 text messages. MCV also contributed a total of $540 to the candidates directly.

MCV endorsed Shaw, Choriki, and Boyett because of their commitment to protecting Billings’ natural resources and planning for smart, sustainable growth.
