TC Energy Announces Plan to Abandon Keystone XL Pipeline
(BOZEMAN, Mont.) – TC Energy Corporation today canceled the controversial Keystone XL Pipeline, which would have transported Canadian tar sands oil over 1,200 miles throughout Montana and other states. Montana Conservation Voters has criticized the pipeline project with Montana’s tribal communities for over 10 years, due to the pipeline’s proximity to critical drinking water supplies for the Fort Peck Reservation.
The decision came on the heels of the Biden Administration revoking the pipeline’s permit to cross the U.S.-Canada border.
“Today’s decision means a brighter future for all Montanans and we should celebrate,” said Whitney Tawney, Executive Director of Montana Conservation Voters. “The Keystone XL Pipeline put over 71,000 outdoor recreation jobs reliant on a clean and healthful environment in jeopardy and even more importantly threatened our tribal partners’ water supplies.”
MCV sent a letter asking for the suspension of the project in 2020 and has featured many indigenous activists leading the fight against the Keystone XL Pipeline on its podcast, MCVcast, which can be found on YouTube here.
