MCV Releases 2021 Legislative Scorecard

Most State Lawmakers ‘turned their backs on our Montana values’

(HELENA, Mont.) – Following the 67th Montana State Legislative Session, Montana Conservation Voters released its 2021 Legislative Scorecard highlighting the shortcomings of state elected officials and celebrating those who worked to protect Montana’s outdoor way of life.

MCV’s 2021 legislative scorecard is available online at mtvoters.org/scorecard.

Most of the 150 state legislators received failing scores of less than 50 percent. Rather than abiding by promises to protect Montana’s outdoors, legislators voted to repeal the Renewable Portfolio Standard, weaken clean water protections and pass several anti-democracy bills making it more difficult for Montanans to exercise their right to vote.

While many legislators abandoned their conservation values during the session, the Montana Legislature came together to implement the state’s recreational marijuana program and agreed to use a portion of the revenue to make a historic investment in our state parks, trails, wildlife conservation and Habitat Montana. Habitat Montana is a popular conservation tool used to improve access, acquire more public lands and protect working farms and ranches in perpetuity.

“The sad reality is most state lawmakers turned their backs on our Montana values this session,” said Whitney Tawney, executive director of Montana Conservation Voters. “This legislature’s attacks on our outdoors should shock every Montanan, and we hope every Montanan will use the scorecard to find out where their representatives stood .”
